 Onam celebration at Pilar, Goa

Scholastic Siby Edakkara wrote from Pilar: “The harvest festival, Onam, is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala, celebrated with joy by people of all communities. It was celebrated in our seminary on Saturday, 5 September. The celebrations were led by the La Salette scholastics. The festival is celebrated to welcome the legendary King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at this time. Onam is celebrated at the beginning of the month Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam Calendar. The most impressive part of Onam celebration is the grand feast called Onasadya (A grand meal). Rice is the essential ingredient of this nine-course strictly vegetarian meal. The meal was served on a tender banana leaf, with the end to the left, on a mat laid on the floor. The dishes were served in strict order. Each food item has a fixed place on different parts of the banana leaf starting with salt. It goes without saying that the entire community relished the delicious meal and thanked God – and king Mahabali.”

Ad-audiendas:

Ad-audiendas exams are like semi-finals for the IV year scholastics (the Comprehensive being the Finals) and undoubtedly, much feared ones. Over the years, one learns different aspects of moral theology and the ‘final hour’ is really the ‘acid test’ to win the ‘certificate’ of confession. No gain without pain! After poring over the notes and books for about a month, our IV year students appeared for their Ad-audiendas exams on 11th July 2009. One of them shares his reflection after being on that ‘Hot Seat’ for one hour, on that auspicious day, facing the three ‘spin bowlers’ with curious onlookers-the audience, behind.

“The viva examinations are always an experience of anxiety and nervousness. But in the end I feel it is worth undergoing such experience at the end of your formation period. Learning is a life-long process. In the Ad-audiendias exams, in fact, three categories of students judge their knowledge. First and foremost, the quite skilful tutors, both intellectually and practicality, are the panellists.  Their aim is only to guide the examinee on the path of process- to think, to take time and to be able to arrive to a common solution. Our examiners were always ready to help us whenever we groped in the dark. The second category is the “examinee’. There are times when he goes completely blank and gets lost. During this phase, he has to keep his cool, and humbly surrender, in an effort to fathom what the examiners expect from him. Since the examinee has amassed a lot of knowledge about various subjects he tends to forget to use his common sense, which is not so common on the hot seat! Do not worry-give your best; this is also a part of examination. Finally the Audience, who are intelligent and do answer well in comparison to the examine-have the responsibility to learn and unlearn some of the issues and questions put forward by the examiner. Hence, it is very apt to say- it’s a community learning, where one has to let go by being receptive, critical and open. I am glad, in the end, all of us are APPROVED”.

The unique Quiz consists of a written round sent to all Seminaries. When the seminaries send the answered papers to Ujjain, they choose the best and send the name to represent the Seminary. In keeping with the Seminary principle of giving everyone a chance, only third year theology students answer the oral test every year and are sent for the quiz. This year Jobit Thottumkara was chosen to represent Pilar. He won the First prize. ‘It is indeed a matter of great joy for the Pilar Theological College as the quiz pits them against the big leading seminaries of India. It is a welcome push for our students to raise their academic standards even higher’ (Rector). Schol. Jobit Thottumkara,  was interviewed by Sharing for his experiences:

What were your feelings when you had gone to Ujjain?

I was really tensed because I had to travel alone. All the more I was tensed, due to language problem [Hindi]

How many faculties participated in the Quiz?

There were altogether eight participants, mainly from central India, ranging from Andhraprdesh to Punjab. There were participants from eminent institutions like St.Charles Seminary, Nagpur,  Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune,  St. Albert’s College, Ranchi Ruhalaya, Ujjain, Holy Spirit, Jullundur etc..

How was the Quiz organized?

The quiz consisted of six rounds, that is True or false round, Quotation round, Fill in the blanks round, identification of place, names round and audio visual round.

Were you confident, during the contest?

I was not very confident, because all other participants were from eminent institutions. Till the 5th round, both Ruhalaya and I were leading with 35 points. In the last round he secured four points while I secured all ten points. Thus I stood first. Then I was given the privilege to speak after the quiz.
